Neve walked into her apartment to the warm smell of spices. She instantly felt calmer. “Bell?” Neve called when she wasn’t greeted at the door.
“Back here! Almost ready!” Bellara chirped back. She was excited about something.
Neve entered her cramped living space. Bellara had arranged the cushions and lit more candles than Neve thought she owned. On the stovetop, Bellara set a tray of dark brown cookies—not burned but so packed with spices that Neve’s stomach growled at the sight. “Well, well…”
“For you,” Bellara said, placing a kiss on Neve’s nose and a cookie in her mouth.
