Annie Granger could admit to herself that she had and did still love Mary. The summers their families spent together were her happiest. She knew Mary had felt the same.
In another life they would have left their husbands and been together, but it wasn't what women did in those days.
They didn't break up their families to be happy. So they both stayed with their husbands. Forced themselves into being friends rather than what they wanted to be.
So it doesn't shock her that Eve fell for Mary's son. But she blamed herself for it. She and Mary should have gone their separate ways. If they'd been less tangled together, would Eve and Jake be different?
