Work Text:

“Courtney," Pat sighed, "I better not regret this."

“Dude, lighten up,” she shrugged. “You know that Emiko’s responsible.”

“Mm-hm.” He pursed his lips. “And you two enabling each other is...?"

"She's gotta restock, and we're hours from Star. If anything happens to S.T.R.I.P.E, you can be as mad as you want, okay?"

“You have the keys?” Emiko called.

"One sec!" Courtney yelled back. She gave Pat a small smile when he dropped the keys into her hand. The socks made her feet slip on the way to Pat's workspace, so she threw the keys, not bothering to look at Emiko. Her girlfriend would be able to catch it either way.

“Pat would want me to remind you that this is just for the arrows you need for our mission," Courtney panted. "Since you do have this and more at Star City, and blah blah blah.”

“Roy does robots, not mechs.” Emiko's breath caught at the sight of some of Pat's latest projects. As she stepped in, her fingertips ghosted over plates of steel, and her gaze lingered on messes of wire that just looked like a tangled mess to Courtney. Her own interests lingered more in history and heroics, not in the tech her stepfather loved. Emiko also preferred the physical aspects of the job, but she secretly liked how cool trick arrows made her look, even if she didn't find the science particularly interesting. There was something special about seeing Emiko phase back and forth, between deep focus and cracking jokes, as she filled her quiver.

Mindlessly, Courtney picked one up and read the tag. "Babe, is this a confetti arrow?”

“Yeah, for when we beat his ass.” Her nails tapped against the table. Courtney was pretty sure that Emiko and Ollie both inherited their father's ADHD, but they were both too stubborn to care to get tested. “Should we have a party horn arrow too?”

“I love you,” Courtney laughed. “But it'll be hard to convince Pat that it was 'strictly necessary.'”

“You’re smart. You can do it.”

Courtney gasped in mock-offense. “Are you planning on leaving me out to dry? Leaving the burden of his judgement on my shoulders?"

“Your sidekick, your responsibility," Emiko grinned.
