"That went well, I reckon," Tonks mused when they returned to the cosmocraft. The cramped capsule suddenly seemed comforting on this alien planet far from home.
"It's interesting that you changed to match their physiology," Millicent observed as she composed a report for transmission to Earth. "Were those the Confederation's diplomatic instructions?"
Millicent was aware of the changes in her fellow cosmowitch's body like a shiver through her own: Tonks's figure taller and leaner, her skin an unnervingly pale shade verging on blue.
"Nah. I just like their vibe. They're interesting to look at."
"That's one way of putting it," Millicent snorted, "Not that I'm complaining. I won't be the ugliest person in the room for a change."
"You don't think that, do you?"
Millicent shrugged. "Me and everyone on Earth."
"Good thing I'm not on Earth, then. Because I like your vibe, too. You're interesting to look at."
"That's very kind." Millicent's practiced smile did not reach her eyes.
"I'm not just saying that! I like looking at you. Sometimes I'd rather look at you than the stars."
Millicent turned in trembling hope, but Tonks was already reaching for her, kissing her breathless at the edge of the universe.
