There’s so much to do this year, now that Ginny and Luna are lead counselors. Over breakfast, they review the list of campers assigned to Cabin 9. Then Ginny polishes broomsticks while Luna restocks craft supplies. There's an air of industrious, self-conscious anticipation as they complete their tasks. They work in silence, slipping back into the charged familiarity they established last summer as assistant counselors.
At sunset, they leave offerings in the cobwebbed mustiness beneath Cabin 9: pebbles, flowers, trinkets collected throughout the day. They hold hands shyly as they open the door to discover how Cabin 9 has decorated itself to welcome them.
Marigold walls, beaded windchimes, and a cheerful bulletin board greet them. Ginny and Luna are so delighted that it takes them a moment to notice there is only one bed, a double. They joke that the cabin has a mind of its own, but each wonders how the ritual unearthed her unspoken longings.
Campers will arrive tomorrow, along with bunk beds, but tonight it’s just Luna and Ginny in the home they built with their yearning. Their hands wander under the covers, and they shiver with newfound intimacy and the racing of their restless summer hearts.
