In many ways, this podfic is very special to me. First of all, there's the story itself. "Unfinished" is one of my all-time favorite DWP fanfics. It's touching and unique and it has stayed with me ever since I first read it. I'm very grateful to chilly_flame for allowing me to record it.
As for the podfic itself, it's been in the making for months :D I recorded it early in the summer, late at night after a day of outdoor sports in the dust when my voice was super hoarse and deep. Which might not have been healthiest choice for my voice (and it also meant that I couldn't re-record anything later on), but I wanted to take that opportunity to record a story with a male POV.
Since the story itself features sketches of Andy, I loved the idea of replicating that for the cover and to use actual fanart. So, after I'd edited everything, I reached out to Mirandy fanartists for help. I'm so happy that Liv (@priestlyvance) joined me in this project. The cover she made is absolutely stunning and perfectly captures the vision I had in mind. It's been such a joy to work with you on this, Liv! <3
In the meantime, I'd been working on "Plenitude", which was the first time that I included something like a soundtrack for a podfic. I guess--my creative processes are hard to reconstruct later on--that that's what made we want to try something similar for "Unfinished", too. Well, that and the fact that "Unfinished" is also a story with a very unique atmosphere and contemplative mood, which I think lends itself to including music that way. In any case, I decided on "Lost and Found" by Michael Nyman from "The Piano". I've never watched the movie but I have played the song on the piano before. I think the tune and mood, and the title, fit "Unfinished" very well. And because I could play and record it myself, I was also able to make variations of the main theme to better reflect the mood of certain scenes. Making a podfic with a soundtrack has always been a dream of mine. I think that with this, with "Unfinished", I might actually have realized it.
Anyway. Whether you listened to this with music or without, I hope that you enjoyed chilly_flame's story, my performance of it and Liv's wonderful cover.
With many thanks to chilly_flame for letting me record this story.
If you're an author who is interested in podfic, I encourage you to check out the Fanworks Permission Statement Builder.
Thank you for listening! I hope you enjoyed it and I would love to hear from you in the comments :)
