Summary
Nell had accepted the Talbot – her family’s home and livelihood – in exchange for their silence. The Blanchefords kept their end of the deal, and Thomas hadn’t even been seen in the village in weeks. That was supposed to be how it all went, after all, no matter how much she hated it; no matter how much the injustice was eating her alive.
She went up there to that big, horrible house every so often to make sure the family couldn’t forget what they had done. It was almost always on a whim, usually early in the day when the Talbot wouldn’t be too busy.
This time, though, her impulsiveness would end up taking her too far.
