5 Things Cass and Steph Shared Before They Were Dating

Summary:

+1 thing they shared after they started

Notes:

The timeline for this is some unholy amalgamation of post-crisis DC and the 2021 Batgirls series. Comments are always appreciated<3

Work Text:

1.

The Clock Tower is quiet as the Batgirls get ready for patrol. Steph has just finished lacing up her boots when a shadow looms over her shoulder. She looks up to see Cass standing behind her.

"Ready, Batgirl?" Cass asks.

A warm fuzzy fills Steph's heart just like it has the last hundred times Cass has asked her this question. She knows she's grinning like a loon. "Ready when you are, Batgirl," she says.

A groan sounds out from the other side of the room. "Quite your flitting and get to your patrol, lovebirds," Barbara says from her computer. "Mister Freeze's bank heist isn't going to stop itself."

"Alright," Steph says. But as she makes her way to the landing she can't help thinking of what Babs said. What a strange thing to call her and Cass lovebirds. They were just friends, obviously. No lovers in sight.

2.

"One peach with lychee jelly and one kiwi with," Tim makes a face like it physically pains him to say it, "cream cheese."

Steph happily accepts her drink. She stabs her straw into it as Tim passes Cass her drink. They were out for a daytime patrol and had lost the rock paper scissors match on who had to get their mid-patrol snacks.

"Cream cheese?" Steph asks Cass after she takes a sip of her own drink.

"Yes. Do you want to try?" she asks holding out her cup to Steph.

Steph grabs it, passing along her own cup. Placing the straw in her mouth she sips until one of the topping comes through. Then she hands it back accepting her drink back.

"It's better than I thought it'd be," she says. Cass makes a hum of agreement, having returned to drinking.

Tim is looking at them with a strange expression on his face. It's searching, like there's a puzzle he can't quite solve.

"What?" she asks.

"Nothing," he says, looking away.

It's weird she decides. But crime in Gotham waits for no man, so her interrogation will have to wait until later.

3.

Barbara rolls her chair over to Steph's door. Normally she would make effort to keep the precious few moments of sleep they get undisturbed, but she can't find Cass. And with how worked up she'd been earlier, Barbara worries that she decided to do something reckless.

The door creeks lightly as she presses it open. As they light seeps into the room, she can just barely make out two distinctive figures wrapped around each other. She shakes her head fondly. She needn't have worried. Of course Cass' girlfriend would provide her the comfort she needed.

Barbara closes the door. She should see about getting her own shut eye.

4.

"Seriously?" Tim asks, raising an eyebrow. "After the stunt he just pulled?"

"I know," Steph cries. "I can't believe he had the guts to just say that."

Tim sips his tea. "A complete lack of brains probably helps," he says, pulling a laugh out of her.

"Can I borrow this?" Cass asks coming into the room.

Suddenly Tim is choking on his tea, face flush, doing everything in his power avoid Cass' direction. Steph whips around and to her absolute mortification sees Cass holding one of her vibrators.

"Cass!" she yelps.

"Sorry." She at least has the decency to put on an apologetic face. With none of the actual behind it. "That wasn't an answer."

"Sure," she squeaks out, making a wild look at Tim.

"Great." Then Cass turns out the back the way she came.

Steph looks at Tim. She almost feels like she should apologies, but Cass' is his sister. It'd probably make the whole situation weirder.

Tim gulps down the rest of his tea. "I'm just gonna go."

"I'll walk you down!" she says.

The walk from her apartment to the parking lot is awkward and filled with blushing, but things calm down some by the time they make it to Tim's car. She shuffles, torn between asking to leave with him or stay and cut she torment shorter.

"You know you can tell me, right?" Tim says. Did he seriously just ask her to talk about her and his sister's sex toy custody arrangement

"I mean it's really not that big of a deal," Steph says. "It's not like we don't wash them. And you know how anal Bruce is about blood work. He runs a full STD panel on everyone one once every three months!" And she's hit babble central. Seriously who let's her run her mouth.

"Okay, fine," Tim says, opening his car door. "Please continue not talking about whatever you and my sister have going on."

And as he practically flees she wonders what it is he actually meant.

5.

Steph shifts pulling the blanket further around she shoulder as she leans into Cass. They've set themselves up on one of the tallest buildings to watch the sunrise, but that's not what Steph is focused on. Her eyes keep drifting to Cass' face, made even more beautiful by the soft light of daybreak.

She can't help taking in the slope of Cass' nose. The shadows her eyelashes make over her cheeks. Her lips. They're chapped, but they look so soft. She wonders what they would feel like pressed against her own.

Oh. She thought about their previous interactions. Steph might be an idiot.

"Hey, Cass," she says. Cass turns to face at her. Steph takes the opportunity to cup her cheeks. "Stop me if this isn't okay." Then she gentle brings their lips together.

When Cass kisses back it feels like fireworks exploding in the sky.

+ 1.

"I now pronounce you partners for life."

Steph grinned tears leaking out from her eyes as Cass kissed her. They made it.

"Are you ready, Mrs. Brown?" Cass asked against her ear.

"Ready when you are, Mrs. Brown," She replied.
