Work Text:
Anne stepped out into the backyard of Green Gables, stretching out her arms. She started down the road, needing to go back to the Avalon schoolhouse to pick up some materials left behind for her. And, to meet up with Diana.
Anne couldn’t hold back a smile as she thought about seeing the other girl yet again. They met up nearly every day they could manage at Green Gables, but that was different. Diana came by to spend time with both Anne and Marilla, and helped Anne with chores. They couldn’t be alone in the way they wanted.
While Anne had a suspicion Marilla would be more okay with their ‘arrangement’ than most, Green Gables was such a…public place. Well, by that I mean people can stop by Green Gables whenever they fancy to check in on Anne and Marilla. Plus, Diana’s house is just across the field, and Anne is convinced Mrs. Barry has the keenest vision around.
Anne could feel the smile on her face as she walked along the path. No one would be suspicious of it, which is exactly what she needed. No one would be suspicious of seeing Anne at the schoolhouse, or seeing Diana with her. The two had been close since they were young, and so no one thought it was strange to see the two attached at the hip.
And they had no reason to even suspect Anne and Diana were engaging in the activities they did. After all, Anne was dating Gilbert Blythe.
She wasn’t, though, in actuality. Gilbert had caught Anne and Diana being closer than would be proper, and put two and two together. Anne and Diana were petrified, and begged the boy not to tell anyone. Much to their relief, Gilbert was okay with it. Even more than okay with it, he agreed to help them. He agreed to be the fake boyfriend for Anne to keep any suspicions away. Meanwhile, Diana could argue she was too busy for a boyfriend if anyone were to ask.
Anne entered the schoolhouse, and headed up to her desk. She gathered all the materials left for her into a satchel, and put it over her shoulder. Now, it was time for her to meet with Diana at the Lake of Shining Waters. She steeled her nerves, and started off.
The walk there wasn’t hard, but Anne always felt a sense of dread when she and Diana met up in these secret places. She was constantly vigilant, deathly terrified of just one person catching sight of them at just the wrong moment, and telling everyone what they were. But, once Anne glimpsed Diana’s lovely black hair, the feeling flew from her chest.
Anne ran the rest of the way down the path, and grabbed Diana in a tight hug. The other girl immediately reciprocated. After a few moments, Anne placed a light kiss at the corner of Diana’s mouth, and both girls’ faces grew red in embarrassment.
It’s okay. For now, they can just indulge in their fantasy.
