Work Text:
“What’cha drawing?” Briar asked, peeking over her girlfriend’s shoulder, before her expression softened and crumbled.
“Oh Bri, you weren’t supposed to see it yet…”
Briar sniffled, shoving her sunglasses onto her eyes to shield herself from the ordeal of being known. Ever since she’d been woken up from her coma by Cupid, she’d been struggling with the fact all their friends were gone.
And now she sees Cupid’s sketchbook, nearly filled up, all with drawings of their friends.
Cupid got up, bringing the girl into a hug. “I was trying to finish it for your birthday. Wanted you to have a way to see everyone again. They all missed you when you fell asleep, you know?”
Cupid wasn’t sure if saying that helped, as Briar just started crying, but she knew the other girl needed to have this release at some point. She’d been bottling it up for weeks.
“They all love you Bri. Me too. And we might not be able to see them, but we can remember them.”
Cupid knew nothing she could say would really help one way or the other. Even though she herself dealt with loss of friends, Cupid knew how she felt was going to be different. As a demigoddess, she’s simply lived longer and will continue to live longer. But she still has room in her heart for new connections.
“Bri, can you look at me?”
Briar finally looked up at the other girl, sunglasses still firmly on her face, now stained with tears.
“One day at a time, okay Bri? It’s okay to grieve. I have all the time in the world to help you.”
Even knowing she’d lose her too one day, Cupid couldn’t help herself from loving Briar, just as she has all her friends. One day she’ll show Briar all the sketchbooks filled with the faces and lives of her other friends. One day at a time though.
