Work Text:
April leaned her back against the short concrete wall of the apartment complex’s roof. Sunita was sitting next to her, looking up in awe at the sky. It was a lovely clear day, and fluffy clouds painted the sky in abstract patterns.
“This is so cool,” Sunita comments, eyes not leaving the sky for even a moment. “I wish we had a sky like this in the Hidden City.”
April thought back on the times she’d been to the Hidden City. No matter what time she was thinking back on, she couldn’t remember seeing a single cloud in the Hidden City sky.
“I wonder why you guys don’t have clouds…Donnie probably knows; I’ll ask him later.”
Sunita nodded, and leaned against her girlfriend. She took April’s hand in hers, then used her other hand to point up to the clouds.
“That one looks like Mayhem!”
April had to admit, the fluffy cloud cluster looked a lot like the magic dog-thingy she’d started taking care of. She glanced across the sky, trying to find some shapes herself.
“That one, right about there, kinda looks like Barry.”
Sunita looked over and giggled. “Yeah it does! Hey, how’s it going with having him as a neighbor and everything?”
“Fine for the most part. His clomping keeps knocking down my ceiling fan, but I blame that on the bad quality ceiling for the most part. But, it’s been pretty good.”
The two kept looking at the clouds, until April suddenly remembered something.
“I totally forgot to tell you! Cassey moved in to the complex, too! She’s just a few doors down from me.”
“That’s awesome!” Sunita’s smile faltered a bit, though. “…if only I could come live around you guys…”
“Why can’t you? Aren’t you an adult now? Or do Googlies age differently?”
Sunita shook her head. “It’s not that. I’m just…scared, I guess. I don’t wanna live on my own, even if people I know are just down the hall. I have a big family; you know about that. So, not living with so many people, or even just another person, is nerve wracking.”
April held Sunita’s hand a bit tighter, and Sunita smiled appreciatively. Her gaze fell to the ground now, the fluffy clouds having lost their appeal. She used her free hand to pick at the concrete roof, thinking. April didn’t speak, letting her girlfriend have her moment. She just held her hand. But, April couldn’t stop the gears in her head from turning.
“…Y’know,” April started after a few minutes of silence. “I’m planning on moving out of my parents’ apartment after college. We…we could live together.” April held her breath, nervous her suggestion would be taken badly.
But Sunita’s eyes were bright when she whipped her head up. “You mean it?”
April held back a relieved laugh. “Yeah, of course I mean it. I don’t get people’s hopes up for nothing.”
Sunita practically tackled her in a hug, grinning as wide as she could. “Thank you so much!”
April just smiled and held her girlfriend tight. “Of course.”
