Innocent Until Proven Girly (The Devil Made Me Into It #1)

Chapter 2: Discussing The Terms

Summary:

Peter's not going to prison anymore, but that doesn't mean he's a free man.
In more than one way!

Chapter Text

The hair on his body receded into him, his hands and legs becoming smoother.
His finger nails grew longer and sharper, gaining a dark green nail-polish in the process.
He felt hair brushing his face, changing from brown to dark red in the process, stopping just past his shoulders.
He looked down at his chest, noticing breasts popping out, his clothes also changing to blue jacket not unlike Maxine's, and a skirt taking the place of his jeans.

He put a hand down his newly acquired panties to check if his penis was still there.
Yup, at least something hadn't changed drastically.

Peter stood up and looked at himself in the two-way mirror.
He had turned from a fairly average, brown-haired young man to an extremely attractive woman, complete with a smooth, curvy waist and large breasts.

If Peter didn't know better, he'd swear he had been transformed into a relation of Maxine's, like they had grown up together.

"OK, either I am having the strangest dream of my life, or I'm a woman now..."
"Oh, this is very much real."

Peter stared at Maxine in shock.
"Bu-but how?! How is this possible?!"
"When you've been around as long as I have, you learn a thing or two."
"Oh my God, you really ARE a witch! I-I just- how?! Holy fuck, magic is real and this is just-"

Peter threw up, his mind breaking down over all of the shit that had occurred over the last twenty-four hours.
"Peter, breathe. It's OK. Everything will be fine. Better, in fact."
Peter pointed a finger at Maxine.
"I don't know why you've done this to me, but you're undoing it!"
"Afraid not, dear. You DID sign the contract, after all."

Peter looked at the documents on the table, now crackling with red lightning around them, like they were a Sith document brought to life.
"Oh fuck, you're not a witch, you're the Devil!"
"Haven't got that much pull, but we do have lunch together every few weeks. There's a place a few blocks from here that does an excellent tikka masala, it's our-
"What the fuck did I sign up for?!"

Maxine sighed.
"Sit down and I'll explain it further."
Peter wanted to stand in defiance, but figured he had as much chance as winning this clash as a blade of grass does against an airplane, so he sat down and crossed his arms.

"Now, you must have a million questions-"
"To start with!"
Maxine's eyes glowed red again, signaling to Peter that he needed to shut up, which he did immediately.

"As I was saying, you're going to have a lot of questions, but since we don't have all day, I'm going to answer the most common ones in rapid succession, with no interruptions. Understood?"
Peter nodded, not wanting to draw her ire.

"Alright then! So..."
Maxine started listing off answers to questions she had heard many times in her career, her fingers unfurling each time she moved to a new one.

"This is most definitely not a dream, prank, simulation, or afterlife. Everything you are experiencing is one-hundred percent real.
As previously stated, I am not the ruler of the Underworld, but I AM a demon, with considerable power and abilities.
I'm not in exile, I just find humanity amusing with its little foibles and contradictions.
I don't use my powers to win cases directly up here. It's no fun playing with the cheats on, after all!
No, I don't own your soul (not in that respect, at least) and this doesn't guarantee a one-way ticket to Hell.
Your service to me will last one Earth year, and after that, I am open to keeping you on if that's what you desire.
Everyone in your old life will not remember you until that year is up, only you and I have any real knowledge of your past.
You're far from the first to be subjected to this, hence this little spiel.
And lastly, you're a woman now because if you're going to work for me, I'm making you into something far more appealing to me."

On that last note, Maxine winked.

Peter took a few moments to let the information settle in.
Moments that felt like days.

"OK, OK, OK... alright. So, not dead, no one's going to wonder where I am, so at least I don't have to chase after everyone in my life and explain all of... this, to them."
"It's easier to get more out of my employees when I remove sitcom distractions."
"You really do love our pop culture, don't you?"
"It's one of your redeeming features as a species!"
"I'm happy Up All Night and Superstore are such big hits down there."
"Never saw'em, I assume they have their fanbases in my circles though."

Peter rubbed his temples.
"So, what exactly will I DO in your employ?"
"You'll be my girl Friday, my red right hand, my go-to."
"Well unless you're gonna Samantha Stevens some law knowledge into my head, I don't-"

Maxine stared right at Peter, eyes glowing purple instead.
Peter's started glowing too, as his brain started getting flashes.
"AHH- MOTHERF-AAAARGH!"
After a few seconds, he calmed down.
"And now you have all the knowledge I do, free and instant. You're getting a LOT of gifts today!
Oh, and remember, I'm a demon. Samantha was a witch, just to be pedantic."
"While I appreciate the brain boost, what do you need me for if you've got all these facts memorized?"
"Even with my talents, I can't be everywhere at once. With your help, I can keep up with the cases I take on, both human and supernatural."

Peter scoured his newly gained knowledge for relevant demon laws.
"But I don't have any demon knowledge!"
"Oh, I've locked that away up there. You possess it, but can't access it yet. Consider it a progress bar, the more you help me, the more I'll unlock."
"Worried I'll find a loophole and weasel my way out?"
"Somehow, I don't think you would. You have a sense of honour about you, and I respect that."

Peter shrugged.
"Gratitude, I guess. I was between a rock and a hard place, and now I guess it's become a Hell place."
Maxine groaned at the pun.
"Well, if you were going to have any faults, making puns isn't a dealbreaker."
Peter smiled slightly.
"I am an army, an army of pun."

Maxine shook her head.
"I must say, you're taking it better than I expected, becoming a woman and all."
"Hey, I'm just happy to be alive and not like, your new purse or something."
Maxine chuckled at that, like she knew something Peter didn't.

"Oh no, you deserve a better fate than that. I like you, and I think you'll grow to like the next year of your life."
Peter stopped to consider what that year would be like.
"So, what am I for the next year?"
"I told you, you're my-"
"No no, I mean, am I still a human, or am I one of you now?"
"Let's say... gifted human. But again, if you find yourself wanting to stay on after your tenure, making you a demon isn't impossible. It's not a snapping of fingers sort of thing, but it's definitely not unheard of."

Peter stood up to look at his new body again.
Or rather, her.
Or was it still him?
Peter knew there would be new things to learn about the body change, but freaking out was the last thing that was going to happen.

All things considered, the new body was... cute!
No, more than that... it was sexy, enticing.
Hot.

"Guess I better come up with a new name for myself. Or did I also miss that in the-"
"Betty."
"Betty?"
"Betty Andrews. That is what your ID and passport will say for the next year."
"Betty Andrews..."

Peter then looked at Maxine in annoyance
"I've gone from one comic book name to another!"
"Not true, Betty didn't marry him."
"Semantics!"
"It's what makes me a great lawyer."

Maxine grinned at that.
She was having too much fun.

"Now, we've gotten past the initial wave of questions. I imagine you have many more, but we'll pick this up in the car."
"Well now hang on, I do have one more question- I signed on in exchange for you defending me, how do you intend to get the charges dropped?"
Maxine smiled, pulling out another folder from her briefcase.
"With this."

Maxine opened the door, calling for one of the officers.
"Please be a dear and get this to the prosecutor's office. My client has been wrongfully accused, and I have all you need on the real perpetrators right here."
The officer gulped before rushing off.

Peter gasped.
"And just like that?"
"Just like that. Oh, and since I know THAT'S the next thing on your mind- no, I didn't set you up. But since the contract did say I would get the charges dropped, the evidence needed to be materialized.
If I was that desperate to claim you, there are far easier ways."
"So, my case just pinged on your radar and you were like 'an opportunity just fell into my lap', basically?"

Maxine touched her nose and smiled.
"You really are clever, despite your own low self-esteem telling you otherwise."
"So, would that make you my guardian devil then?"
"That's one way to put it. Now, let's go. I'm going to take you to your new home for the next year."
"New home?"
"Well, you just got kicked out of your apartment, so you'd need a place to live. Not that it matters, I'd have given you this upgrade regardless. You deserve better, and you know it, Betty."

Peter started walking towards the door, wondering what his (her?) new home would be like.
Though even if it turned out to be a cage over a spike-pit in Maxine's own place, it would still beat the run-down deathtrap of his old living situation.

As the two women were making their way out of the interrogation room, they heard a voice.
"Well hello again, hot stuff!"
They both turned around.
Peter recognized the asshole cop that tried roughing him up earlier.

"You pretty ladies aren't leaving already are you?"
"After the way you treated me, you-"
"You are indeed correct, Officer Brady. My client is innocent, so our business here is concluded."
"Oh, but it's just beginning! I haven't convinced either of you to come to my place yet."

Peter could hardly believe his ears.
An hour ago, Brady had been right up in his face with the whole "bad cop" routine, almost ready to throw him in a cell without trial and be done with it.
Now he was eying Peter down like he was working out which part of Peter's new body he wanted to fondle first.

"Brady, must we do this each time I come down to this station?"
"Way I hear it, you often come in without your clients even calling you, so you must be here for other reasons..."
Brady winked, still thinking himself being the center of the situation.

"Oh sure- the weak coffee you boys put out each and every day."
"Well that's why you need to come home with me, I can give you something much stronger."
Peter and Maxine both knew that, while he wasn't making the motion, Brady wanted to thrust his pelvic region right at the both of them.

Brady turned his attention right onto Peter.
"How about you, sweetheart? Now that you're in the clear, there's nothing saying we can't hook up now."
Peter turned beet-red.
Today had been a roller-coaster of events.

Being arrested for a crime he didn't commit, becoming a woman while learning magic was real, now being hit on by the same guy who would probably be constantly pointing a gun at his head if he thought he could get away with it.
What the fuck next?

"I-I, girls. I-I mean, I'm into girls."
Brady tutted at that, like Peter said something factually incorrect.

"Well I can fix that easily, little lady."
Brady grinned, getting ready to lay on the charm.
Peter was fuming, ready to explode when Maxine stepped in.

"No no, allow ME to fix this grave injustice, Officer Brady."
"Oh, I finally won you over, Maxine?"
Maxine chuckled.
"I think I'm going to win in this encounter. Why don't we step back into the interrogation room and uh..."
Maxine ran her fingers down Brady's chest as she spoke.
"Discuss the terms?"
"Yes m'am!"

Maxine practically dragged Brady back into the room, motioning for Peter to follow.
Peter obliged, with a baffled look on his face.
Brady went in to start kissing Maxine, when she put a finger up to his lips.

"Now, you don't mind if I take the lead on this little dalliance of ours?"
"I mean, I'm used to being the big dog, but if I finally get in your pants, you can do whatever you want!"
"Anything, you say?"
"Fuck yeah, let's get wild!"

Maxine grinned and turned to Peter.
"I'm good with a verbal contract, and that sounds like open consent to me. What do you think, Betty?"
"Uh, s-sure, Maxine."
Maxine turned back to Brady, and snapped her fingers.
